The Normal Communication Frequency in 2026

Consistency builds a relationship.

  • Immediate Family: Usually 2–3 times a week. Most families have moved toward a continuous stream of messages through social media but message through text are better to make sure family and friends see the data.  messaging with photos of a meal, a quick family fact are more common than a long weekly catch-up post.

  • Close Friends: Once a week to once a month. The norm here is communication where the sender's meme or text voice can be replied to whenever they have a spare moment.

  • Extended Family & Network: Once a quarter. This is the group most likely to wonder "what's going on" if they don't hear from you, but won't text for the information.  Emailing them is a good way to share important information.

How to Broadcast News Without a Newsletter

Use WhatsApp/Telegram Broadcast Lists: Unlike a group chat, a Broadcast List sends your message to each person individually. It feels like a 1-on-1 text to them, and when they reply, it’s only to you. This avoids the "reply-all" chaos that people often hate about family groups.
