Signals for a Break in the Conversation | Lent Prep

The "Universal Pause" Gestures

  • The Flat Palm (The Stop): Raise one hand slightly (waist or chest height) with your palm facing the group. It’s the international symbol for "hold on" and is hard to ignore without being overtly aggressive.

  • The Coffee Cup: Raising your coffee cup accompanied by a pointing finger—signals that you have a need for a break and a pause in the discussion.

  • Time Out: While a bit more informal, forming a "T" with your hands is a clear, playful way to signal a break in the chaos, especially in high-energy creative sessions.

Body Language Shifts

  • Leaning In: Moving your torso toward the center of the table or toward the speakers signals that you are about to take the floor. People instinctively pause when someone enters their immediate space.

  • The Scribe Move: If you are near a whiteboard or a shared document, picking up a marker or hovering your hands over the keyboard can signal that you need a "pause for documentation."

  • The Eye Contact Sweep: Slow, deliberate eye contact with each person speaking, followed by a steady gaze at the group as a whole, can exert a grounding influence that slows the tempo of the room.
